Guitar Lessons Aurora Testimonial For Rick Washbrook
My Days Studying, Jamming, Living, Soul searching, With Rick Washbrook.
I can truly say I had an extraordinary musical learning experience living with Rick Washbrook for two years. I was getting a guitar lesson everyday. Rick has a very deep and rich understanding of the harmonic capabilities of the guitar.
I now feel free playing music using the entire fret board of the guitar. This is something I didn’t think I’d ever achieve; having spent years working on my guitar playing with limited results, it was Rick Washbrook that opened my eyes to the basic triad shapes and then moving forward to advanced voice leading harmonies on the guitar fret board.
Rick Washbrook is a one of a kind guitar player. I went to many of his Show’s in the 90’s and even earlier than that. Rick played solos that touched me. He made me feel deeply involved in the music. The one thing that always struck me about Rick Washbrook on stage was the intensity and expressiveness of his playing. He always had the audience spell bound.
I once asked Rick Washbrook on his break at one of his shows is there any advise you could give me, if you had to coin in up in a sentence or two?
Rick Washbrook said
“Get old guitar magazines, look for new instruction books, video
instruction tapes, instruction cassettes, harmony books from the library. Read as much as you can. Now the tip is, if you really understand one thing from each source that you really truly can use in your playing, you will be on that road to becoming the guitarist you have the potential to be, and beyond. Don’t let the whole book or instruction CD and all its lessons over whelm you. You will come back to all your instruction materials in months or years to come in the future and then you will get one thing to learn, and apply to your playing.” Quote Rick Washbrook
There was a time in the early 90’s after Rick Washbrooks parents died back to back. Rick owned a town house at the time north of Toronto. I asked if I could rent one of his rooms. Rick was pleased with the idea, and I was very happy because we really got to develop a musical bond and share ideas.
We had so many good times at the kitchen table playing and jamming, fun times together. I was up close to one of the best guitar players. Rick Washbrook was always one of the guys, never had an ego. I wondered sometimes if he knew how good he was.
Lots of weekends Rick Washbrook would be coming home from a show around 3:00 in the morning and I would come walking in from the long
night shift and Washbrook would still be up sitting at the kitchen table practicing at 5:00 in the morning. We would get a Mickey of scotch out and drink a few, and play and laugh. Licks would come out of his head at times that I didn’t even know were in him. It was like electric when playing of his feel and Rhythm chops. Those are precious moments and days for me. He is a man with a big vocabulary of music, a big heart, and a spiritual respectful servant to the inspiration of music and performance.
I saw the man’s mind work. Rick Washbrook is the kind of guitarist that goes 270 miles and hour or flat nothing. He would practice him self to exhaustion.
I have enjoyed all of Rick Wasbrooks CD’s. The ones that blew me away the most are his tribute for Lenny Breau called “A Gypsy’s Bed”, and his CD project called “Roncesvalles Tango”. I feel that Washbrook really captured world class playing on these CD’s. I play them for many musician friends in the San Francisco Bay area and they were knocked out asking who this guy is, it’s awesome is. He never stops advancing.
Rick Washbrook opened me up to not only play better but feel more comfortable. He liked my voice and encouraged me to sing all the time. Now 19 years later I sing all the time. He shared the soul with me something that can not be just taught in one or a few lessons.
Thanks to Rick my blues and solo improvising has improved beyond belief. Rick as a brave artist, a student of spiritual purity, and an extraordinary performer, recording artist, and teacher.
